TikTok Introduces alt Text A New Accessibility Features on Global Accessibility Awareness Day
In celebration of Global Accessibility Awareness Day, TikTok has introduced several new updates aimed at enhancing accessibility for users with visual and sensory impairments.
The platform continues its efforts to make content more inclusive and user-friendly for its diverse global community.

Among the latest additions is expanded alt-text functionality for image posts. Creators can now include descriptive text either while uploading or even after publishing a photo.
About the new Feature
This feature, which had been spotted in testing earlier this year, is now officially live and offers improved content access for users who are blind or have low vision.
For video content, TikTok already supports auto-generated captions and text-to-speech functions. With these tools and the new alt-text option for images.
TikTok is now offering alternative descriptions across most core visual elements, helping to make content more navigable and meaningful for those relying on assistive technology.

Another major update is the addition of a color contrast toggle, which enhances the visibility of text, icons, and interface components. This tool is especially helpful for individuals with low vision or who experience difficulty reading content with minimal contrast.
TikTok has also made changes to accommodate users who have enabled bold text settings on their devices. Now, when that setting is activated, all in-app text will automatically appear in bold, ensuring consistency and better readability.
These features add to TikTok’s growing set of accessibility tools, which already include text size customization, dark mode, photosensitivity controls, and more.
TikTok emphasizes its commitment to accessibility, stating:
“We know that when people feel seen, heard, and supported, they’re empowered to share their stories, create and connect with others in meaningful ways. That’s why we’re focused on continuously building products that serve everyone. We see accessibility not just as a responsibility, but as an opportunity to innovate and foster a more inclusive platform for our global community.”
As the digital world becomes more inclusive, TikTok’s latest enhancements are a positive step toward ensuring all users—regardless of ability—can participate, create, and engage fully on the platform.
